[Illuminated manuscript]. 1889.

An illuminated manuscript commemorating the work of J.G. O'Connor and his involvement with the Irish cause. The manuscript, bound in a leather cover with gold embellishments, contains the speech that John Dillon, M.P. in the House of Commons, England, made to O'Connor upon presenting him with a gold watch chain and sovereign purse. The occasion was celebrated with a picnic at Chowder Bay, 30th October 1889, which was also attended by the Irish delegates Sir Thomas Grattan Esmonde and John Deasey. The manuscript also contains O'Connor's reply upon receiving the gifts, which is written in the third person. The volume comprises six pages, with sepia photos of J.G. O'Connor and possibly John Dillon attached to the inside front and back covers. The calligraphic handwriting is bordered by ornate designs of Australian fauna, the Irish and Australian emblems, and three-leafed clover. There are also colourful patterned border designs.
